1. Is Mass-media doing enough to provide us with a real insight into African life while also reporting on events in Africa as they occur?

Honestly speaking Mass media doesn’t focus on the real Africa. In my opinion, the media seems to know to how to portray Africa just to suit them. For example, the Ethiopian airlines all female crew was a powerful story and yet it was barely given any mass media attention. It seems clear to me that the negative headlines are much more preferred when it comes to reporting about Africa.

      2. “Stereotypes play an important role in helping us make sense of the world, and are not necessarily lies”….What are some of the most common representations of Africa in the media?

Well I somewhat agree with the statement. Unfortunately for Africa stereotyping has played a big role in influencing the world to have a negative perception on Africa. A well known perception of Africa is we are poor, we live in tree or mud huts, the list goes on. For me, although these stereotypes do not put me off Africa as a continent, If I am being honest, there are some African countries I do not want to visit because of what I have seen on TV or been told.

      3. Is there a pressing need to alter western portrayal of Africa?

Yes, definitely I believe Africa needs that. I watched a short clip based on how black Africans are portrayed in western movies, it’s either Africans are thieves, violent, crazy or have no class. Such negative media can be misleading especially to those who have never been to Africa and therefore yet to experience the real Africa.
